BoxyCharm February 2019 Review

Quick product reviews and swatches

Hey guys!

In case you are unfamiliar with BoxyCharm, it is a monthly beauty box subscription. For about $26/mo ($21 plus tax), you get five full-sized beauty products delivered to your home every month.

The theme for this month’s box was After Glow. I like that they skipped the hearts and roses that a lot of brands go for in February; instead, this was a really fresh take on the month of love. Afterglow refers to the pinkish hue and golden light of the sky right after sunset–a really gorgeous, romantic time. However, as ties more directly into the whole Valentine’s Day theme, the phrase “basking in the afterglow” can also refer to the moments of satisfaction right after sex.

I think the contents of this box definitely fit the AfterGlow theme, in both contexts:

TOO FACED | Better Than Sex Mascara, $24

I haven’t opened it because I am trying to finish up the two mascaras that I’m currently using. But, I am looking forward to trying this mascara. People absolutely swear by it. A nice addition to the box and my collection.

PRETTY VULGAR | Shimmering Swan Highlighter in Sparkling Sass, $32

I have loved every Pretty Vulgar product that I’ve tried. So, I was looking forward to trying this highlighter. In the pan, it looked like it may be a bit too gold for my preference, but on the skin the shade is a perfect champagne-like hue. The formula just melts into my cheek and does not have any glitter or emphasize any texture. This is exactly what I look for in a highlighter.

TOUCH IN SOL | No Poreblem Primer, $18

This cute pink primer is a dupe for the YSL Touche Èclat Blur Primer that I’m trying to finish up in my project pan. It feels the same (maybe a tad bit more lightweight), wears the same and even smells exactly the same. The amazing part is that not only is this primer more than 50% less expensive than YSL (which is $52), but it’s also cruelty-free!

SOL DE JANEIRO | Coco Cabana Cream, $20

I really cannot stand the smell of this body cream. It smells like a combination of artificial coconut and movie popcorn butter. As soon as I opened the container, I immediately closed it again. I didn’t even bother testing the feel, because I’m just going to give it away. It’s a no from me dog. Hard Pass.

NUDESTIX | Magnetic Luminous Eye Color in Copper Foil, $24

NUDESTIX eyeshadow pencils do not work for me as lid colors. My eyelids are too oily so it always just becomes a creased, greasy mess a few short hours into the wear. However, I have found that the long-wear formula make these great for my lower lash line. This copper color isn’t unique to my collection, but I think it works beautifully with the box’s theme. If you don’t have oily lids, this makes for a quick eye look. You can just place it all over the lid and blend it out with your finger.

Overall, I think this month’s box was pretty good. My favorite items were the highlighter and mascara. Obviously I won’t be using the body cream, but I can definitely get use out of  the other two items as well. The total of successful products in this box comes to $98, not bad for a box that cost less than $30.

Next month is a BoxyLuxe month (for which I’m subscribed). I have seen some spoilers, but I’m super curious about what will actually be in the box that I receive. What was your favorite BoxyCharm item this month? Let’s chat!

K Beauty Corner v. 3: Double Cleansing- The Secret to a Truly Clean Face

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post on the infamous 10-step Korean skin care regiment. Within that post, I did try to give a condensed version of the routine, but I know that, like me, people can have extremely busy lives where even five steps is way too much.

So, out of all ten steps, which one has given me the biggest results? You can probably guess from the title, but the answer is double cleansing. As someone with combination, but acne-prone, skin I can honestly say that I have absolutely seen the difference that using the double cleanse process has made for me.

Step 1: Oil cleansing

Out of the two steps in the double cleanse process, this one is probably the least common in Western skin routines. Ironically, this is also the most effective step.

Oil cleansing is using an oil, such as coconut oil, or oil cleanser, such as my current favorite— Lancôme Énergie de Vie Smoothing & Purifying Cleansing Oil— on dry skin to break down any makeup, oil or grime on your face. Because oil attracts oil, it does a much better job of really adhering to all of the oily junk on your face and in your skin that can clog pores, attract bacteria and cause breakouts. Once you massage your oil into your skin, you gently rinse it off with lukewarm water. All of your makeup, even waterproof, and grime will wash away with the oil.

Step 2: Foam Cleanser

Next, just to get rid of any residual dirt or oil, you follow up with a foam cleanser- such as SuperCleanse, a mud to foam charcoal clearing cleanser. This second step ensures that anything that wanted to cling on, is now gone. I personally like using the charcoal cleanser to even further detox my skin and help clear up any breakouts I may be suffering from.

As I mentioned, I have combo skin, but this double cleanse process works on all skin types. There are so many oils and cleansers on the market, that you can very easily find one suitable for your exact skin care needs.

Let me know which are your favorite products for the double cleansing process.

K-Beauty Corner: 10-step Korean skin care regiment

A quick guide to the 10-step skincare routine that will have your face in its best condition possible.

Hello, beautiful people.

Welcome to the first K-beauty corner of the new year. This month’s feature is not about a brand or product, but is all about the process. One of the biggest aspects of Korean beauty to be gaining traction in the West right now is the Korean skin care regiment. While many people are hesitant because of the many steps, others are flocking to it because of its amazing results. While I must honestly say that I am not as diligent as I ought to be, I have personally seen the positive effects of adopting this regiment.

Here are the ten steps that should be done twice per day:

Step 1: Oil Cleanser

Step 2: Foam Cleanser

Step 3: Exfoliator (3x per week max)

Step 4: Toner

Step 5: Essence

Step 6: Serum

Step 7: Sheet Mask

Step 8: Eye Cream

Step 9: Moisturizer

Step 10: SPF (obviously not necessary at night)

Ten steps seems like a lot, but keep in mind that some steps, such as exfoliating do not need to be done every day. Other steps, such as an essence, can be left out based on your skin’s needs. Personally, I do at least 5 of these steps twice per day, and I add in a third cleansing step.

If anyone is interested in trying the Korean skin care regiment, but feels like 10 is way too many steps for you to realistically commit to, here are the key parts:

  1. Double cleanse– The oil gets into your skin and breaks down & pulls out the grim and makeup of the day. The cleanser washes away the residuals.
  2. Toner– Your skin needs to be balanced after multiple cleansings.
  3. Serum– It’s like vitamins for the skin.
  4. Eye cream– The skin around the eyes is delicate. Pay it a little extra attention.
  5. Moisturizer & SPF– Combine the last two steps by using a facial moisturizer with SPF. At night you can opt for a heavier face cream without SPF.

Also, keep in mind that taking care of yourself and your face should not been seen as a chore or a task to cross off your list of things to do. Think of it as a way to pamper yourself. You are giving yourself and your skin the attention it deserves.

Give them a try and let me know if you saw a difference in the condition of your skin. Soon I’ll be showing my full skincare routine which includes the products I use for each of these steps.

Tony Moly I’m Real Sheet Mask Haul Review

I tried out 8 different sheet masks from our trip to Tony Moly. Check out how they worked for me.

A few weeks ago, L’advocate chic and I went to the Tony Moly store in Chinatown in New York City & I picked up a bunch of their sheet masks from the I’m Real line. Since this is a mid-week mini, I kindly compiled my thoughts and observations on each mask in a quick to read table below. I listed them in the order that I tried them out. Please note that I have combination skin with a very oily T-zone and dry patches near my nose, mouth and some places on my forehead.

I will say that I has two definite favorites from the bunch: the Tomato- Radiance and the Red Wine- Pore Care. These two will definitely be getting repurchased very soon. My runner up was the Avocado mask. I think this is a great mask to have on hand this winter to give your skin an extra boost of moisture during these  drying months.

If you are interested in purchasing these or any other of the many masks (including several others from the I’m Real line that I was unable to purchase in the haul), check out the Tony Moly website here. They are $2.99/$3.00 each. However, when we went to the Chinatown store, I caught a sale and was able to get 18 for $29.99 using the buy 10, get 8 free promotion.

Key Ingredient Use Initial thoughts Next Day
Seaweed Skin Purifying • cooling on the skin
• when I took it off my skin felt moisturized and radiant
Same day:
• my skin looked and felt absolutely fantastic
• my makeup applied really nicely except for a small area on the perimeter of my forehead which felt a little sticky
Tea Tree Skin Soothing • felt refreshing on the skin while it was on
• left my skin feeling a little tacky
• seemed to draw impurities to the surface—I ended up cleansing my face afterwards to get rid of some of that. Definitely not a mask you would want to do before going out
• blemishes shrank in size and were mostly gone
Red Wine Pore Care • cooling
• pores were noticeably smaller immediately after
• Skin looked fresh and balanced & not overly dewy but had a healthy glow–  wore this after two straight nights of Halloween makeup. Same night, right after taking off second night’s look
• skin looked fantastic
Rice Clear Skin • mask was nice and cool when I put it on so it helped tighten my pores
• skin looked bright and refreshed, but calm too
• looked like I had taken a shot of vitamins to the face
• skin continued to look bright and healthy
Pomegrante Elasticity • face felt a bit tighter & more firm
• looked more radiant
• there was not a lot of sticky serum left on my skin  like I have gotten with other masks
• did not notice a difference in my skin the next day
Tomato Radiance • smells like tea tree oil (which gave me confidence that it would clear up imprefections)
• no immediately noticeable difference
• a breakout had mostly cleared up
• skin definitely looked clearer
Avocado Nutrition smells like a sweetly scented body wash or candy Same day;
• left my skin feeling very moisturized, not at all greasy
• my makeup went on well afterwards
