BoxyCharm February 2019 Review

Quick product reviews and swatches

Hey guys!

In case you are unfamiliar with BoxyCharm, it is a monthly beauty box subscription. For about $26/mo ($21 plus tax), you get five full-sized beauty products delivered to your home every month.

The theme for this month’s box was After Glow. I like that they skipped the hearts and roses that a lot of brands go for in February; instead, this was a really fresh take on the month of love. Afterglow refers to the pinkish hue and golden light of the sky right after sunset–a really gorgeous, romantic time. However, as ties more directly into the whole Valentine’s Day theme, the phrase “basking in the afterglow” can also refer to the moments of satisfaction right after sex.

I think the contents of this box definitely fit the AfterGlow theme, in both contexts:

TOO FACED | Better Than Sex Mascara, $24

fullsizeoutput_2f6a

I haven’t opened it because I am trying to finish up the two mascaras that I’m currently using. But, I am looking forward to trying this mascara. People absolutely swear by it. A nice addition to the box and my collection.

PRETTY VULGAR | Shimmering Swan Highlighter in Sparkling Sass, $32

fullsizeoutput_2f61

I have loved every Pretty Vulgar product that I’ve tried. So, I was looking forward to trying this highlighter. In the pan, it looked like it may be a bit too gold for my preference, but on the skin the shade is a perfect champagne-like hue. The formula just melts into my cheek and does not have any glitter or emphasize any texture. This is exactly what I look for in a highlighter.

TOUCH IN SOL | No Poreblem Primer, $18

fullsizeoutput_2f63

This cute pink primer is a dupe for the YSL Touche Èclat Blur Primer that I’m trying to finish up in my project pan. It feels the same (maybe a tad bit more lightweight), wears the same and even smells exactly the same. The amazing part is that not only is this primer more than 50% less expensive than YSL (which is $52), but it’s also cruelty-free!

SOL DE JANEIRO | Coco Cabana Cream, $20

fullsizeoutput_2f65

I really cannot stand the smell of this body cream. It smells like a combination of artificial coconut and movie popcorn butter. As soon as I opened the container, I immediately closed it again. I didn’t even bother testing the feel, because I’m just going to give it away. It’s a no from me dog. Hard Pass.

NUDESTIX | Magnetic Luminous Eye Color in Copper Foil, $24

fullsizeoutput_2f67

NUDESTIX eyeshadow pencils do not work for me as lid colors. My eyelids are too oily so it always just becomes a creased, greasy mess a few short hours into the wear. However, I have found that the long-wear formula make these great for my lower lash line. This copper color isn’t unique to my collection, but I think it works beautifully with the box’s theme. If you don’t have oily lids, this makes for a quick eye look. You can just place it all over the lid and blend it out with your finger.

Overall, I think this month’s box was pretty good. My favorite items were the highlighter and mascara. Obviously I won’t be using the body cream, but I can definitely get use out of  the other two items as well. The total of successful products in this box comes to $98, not bad for a box that cost less than $30.

Next month is a BoxyLuxe month (for which I’m subscribed). I have seen some spoilers, but I’m super curious about what will actually be in the box that I receive. What was your favorite BoxyCharm item this month? Let’s chat!

Best of Beauty 2018: Love, Beauty & Planet Deodorant

We’ve all heard the warnings about aluminum in our anti-perspirants. It’s not too great. So, heeding the advise of my doctor, I decided to switch from using anti-perspirant to deodorant. Instead of stopping the natural process of sweating, I was just aiming to stay fresh.

About two years ago, when I made the switch, the deodorant aisles of stores didn’t actually have many (read- actually zero) deodorants. All of the major brands pretty much only made antiperspirants. So, I found myself at Whole Foods in the natural deodorant section. Over the years, I’ve tried a several natural deodorants. The two that I have found to work the best are Schmidt’s Naturals and Love, Beauty & Planet.

I wore Schmidt’s Bergamot & Lime deodorant everyday for over a year until suddenly I started developing rashes under my arms. I honestly thought it was irritation from waxing until one day my husband ran out of his antiperspirant and used mine. He thought it worked well, so he went out and purchased one for himself (different scent). Within a few days, his underarms were also covered in painful rashes. Fortunately, after a few days sans deodorant (thankfully cold weather 🙏🏽) both of our pits were back to normal.

After that fiasco, he went back to his tried and true antiperspirants (he was low-key traumatized and won’t even look at natural deodorant anymore) and I began my hunt again for another natural deodorant that would work. That’s when I found the Love, Beauty & Planet Deodorant in the scent Coconut Water & Mimosa Flower (in Target btw).

fullsizeoutput_2af6.jpeg

This deodorant smells super refreshing (the name really is appropriate) and keeps me fresh all day without any touchups. Natural deodorant wearers know that it is rare for a product to actually last an entire day without having to run to the bathroom to do a quick refresh. Thankfully, this one actually makes it through, and for a natural deodorant, that’s really the top review you can give.

Would you guys make the switch over to natural deodorants?

Best of Beauty 2018: Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash

I’m the kind of person that changes their body wash monthly. I like switching up the scents, or changing the formula types (foaming, gel, even bars of soap). Additionally, my husband and I would not use the same one. He has ultra dry skin (and eczema). I have oily acne-prone skin (yes, on my body 😒). So, needless to say, we never looked for the same thing in our body wash product. Not any more.

As I have mentioned a million times since the news of their cruelty-free certification was released, I have been amped to try as many Dove products as I could. So, you can imagine my hypeness when I saw that the Dove Deep Moisture Nourishing Body Wash was sold at Costco (one of my favorite places ever). Since the body wash claimed to be deeply moisturizing, I thought my husband could use it also; so we grabbed it.

fullsizeoutput_2af0.jpeg

Guys…I am not in the least bit sorry that our trial purchase of this product was a three-pack of the jumbo size bottles (because…Costco). This body wash is fantastic. The scent is pleasant and fresh, not too floral or fruity, perfect for a unisex wash. The formula is a rich, thick cream that lathers like an absolute dream. If you like being covered in a million little bubbles, this is the body wash for you.

After the shower, my skin is left feeling soft and moisturized, but still clean. It feels like I put on a light lotion straight out of the bath without having to do so. I’ve even noticed that my husband’s skin, which is usually covered in dry patches by this time of year, is much more normal than I’ve seen the past several winters.

Guys, I’ve been converted. I am no longer a serial soap switcher. I think Dove will have its place in our shower for a long time to come.

What’s your favorite bath product?

Spring Cleaning: Winter Empties, Skincare & Body

Hello, Beautiful People!

Welcome back to my blog! I know we are well into the Spring season, but I still wanted to share with you all of my final thoughts and reviews for all of the products that I finished up this past winter.

As I mentioned in my “First Empty of 2018” post, I think final reviews are the truest and most useful. By the time a person is done with a product, they have had ample time to wear it, test it under different conditions, pair it with different products, etc. So, without further delay, let’s get into my Winter Empties, Pt. 1- Skincare & Body.

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-1

fullsizeoutput_2315

Claims:

This all-in-1 bi-phase cleanser is surprisingly powerful yet gentle to skin. It is specially formulated to effectively cleanse, remove even waterproof/longwear makeup, and refresh. Like a magnet, micelles capture and lift away dirt, oil and makeup without harsh rubbing, leaving skin perfectly clean and refreshed without over-drying.” -garnierusa.com

Final Thoughts:

This was the first micellar water that I ever used. I thought it did a great job of removing my makeup, especially the waterproof version.

Did it live up to its claims? Yes. I think it definitely did.

Repurchase? Only the waterproof formula. Otherwise, I am happy with my current makeup wipes.

Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream

fullsizeoutput_2316

Claims:

This morning-after eye cream with coffee beans, panax ginseng, magnolia extract, and natural optic brighteners rapidly wakes up tired eyes. It helps reduce dark circles and unsightly bags, refreshing to restore a radiant look.” -sephora.com

Final Thoughts:

I loved that this eye cream smelled like citrus. It was definitely a refreshing scent for the morning. The pink color seemed to help brighten my under-eye area on my more tired days, but overall…continue reading over at Everyday Royal.
