December 2017 (& Final) Glam Bag Review

Find out what I got in my December Ipsy Bag, and why this will be my last one.

Hi guys! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and are as excited for the new year as I am. Welcome to my final Glam Bag review (at least for a while). I will get into why this is the last one a bit later.

(If you want an overview of how Ipsy works and how I got into it, read my first review.)

These are the profile settings I used for this month. There have been no changes from last month to this one.

December’s Ipsy bag was a gorgeous icy blue, very appropriate for the season. With the cool silvery blue and silver detail across the top, it reminded me of snow, icicles and beautiful Christmas ornaments. I am happy that they did not go full-out Christmas green and red.

fileAsset

This month’s products were a well-rounded group. There were two K-Beauty items that I was very happy about, and based on the brow product they sent me, I could tell that they were trying to make up for last month’s brow fail.

SON & PARK, Beauty Water

fileAsset

I am really happy with this product. As with a lot of skincare, it is hard to be able to form an accurate opinion without trying the product for an extended amount of time. So, I don’t want to pre-judge it. However, as this is a product that I was considering purchasing from Sephora, I am very happy to be able to try it from Ipsy first.

SMASHBOX, Be Legendary Lipstick in Legendary

fileAsset

I am always happy to try new red lipsticks. This color was right in time for the holidays. As we mentioned in out Red Lip Rundown, a red lip is PERFECT for all the holiday and end-of-year parties. This is a very flattering shade. I’m happy with this one.

NYX, Faux Blacks Eyeliner in Blackberry

fileAsset

I LOVE this! This may be my favorite item from this month’s bag. The dark purple liner is the perfect not-black color for when you want to use a dark liner, but do not want the harshness of black, and brown is just not enough. Also, purple is a very flattering color on both brown eyes and deeper skin. I’ve already added this to the top of my vanity as a product to use often.

PURLISSE BEAUTY, Sheet Masks

fileAsset

I am really excited to try the Green Tea + Ginger Mask. The Coconut + Rice one, not so much because I already have combo-oily, acne-prone skin and moisturizing sheet masks tend to not be the greatest for me. My husband, on the other hand, will enjoy it. I like that the sheet masks were included in the bag because I really enjoy facial masks, especially sheet masks (see two of my sheet mask haul reviews here and here).

TRÈSTIQUE, Mini Brow Pencil in Espresso

fileAsset

They tried. They really did. I can appreciate that after I was sent a brow product totally inappropriate for my skin and hair color, that Ipsy took the time to send me another brow product that was better suited for me. However, I do not like this product. I like brow pencils with much smaller tips to get more precise, hair-like strokes. Furthermore, the pigment of this product is terrible, perhaps it is too waxy, but I could work on one brow for five minutes and barely see any difference. Unfortunately, this is my least favorite product from this month’s bag.

_________

Overall, I think Ipsy did a good job this month. There was a really good mix of items to try, and I like that it was a minx of both makeup and skincare.

So, why I am I stopping my Ipsy subscription? Honestly, I am just more enticed by BoxyCharm. While the value of the Ipsy bags may be more than $10, I just don’t feel like paying $10 for a bag of samples. Ipsy says that they send full-sized or “deluxe sample”-sized products, but I can get free samples with my Sephora and Ulta orders every month. The only full-sized items you receive are ones that CANNOT be smaller, like sheet masks or individual eye shadows. I would rather pay $11/month more to get a box of all full-sized items. So, beginning in January, that is what I will do. I am honestly, quite excited to see what BoxyCharm will send me. So, stay tuned to see how I make out, and if maybe you’d be interested in giving THAT subscription service a try.

I hope you guys enjoyed my Glam Bag review series while it lasted. Who knows? It may come back one day. For the foreseeable future, I hope you look forward to and enjoy my new BoxyCharm reviews. New year. New series. Lots of new products to try and hopefully enjoy.

Thanks for reading guys & happy holidays! 💜

The vibe for ipsy this month was all about celebrating individuality. I can definitely appreciate that. It is important for people to love themselves as they are and to be able to appreciate others as THEY are. What is the world, if not diverse? Anyhoo, this month’s bag was pretty simple. There was no overt connection to the them. I got a mustard and bronze bag. The other option (you can’t choose, you get what they send) was a mono-chrome bag of blue with a blue metallic portion (where my bag’s bronze is). I think my bag is pretty. I somehow managed to spill one of the products all over it as soon as I opened it, but we will get to that…

bag

NAKED COSMETICS, Mother Nature #06

shadow

In one of my recent bags I got a loose shadow and said that I liked it. So, I am assuming that’s why I was sent this one. The color is pretty. It is a iridescent brown with a strong blue shift. My problem was the container. The powder spilled all over me, my desk, and the ipsy bag (ruined) when I tried to open it…and no I didn’t have it turned upside down or anything. There is no sifter. The color was nice. Good payoff. Lasted a good amount of time, but the mess stuck with me… I would still give it another try though.

NOMAD COSMETICS, Multi-Perfection Duo Brow Powder in Brunetta Brillante

brow powder

I’m not sure what demographic they meant to send this to, but it most definitely could not have been mine nor anyone whose hair was not blonde. I definitely indicated that my hair was dark. This light/mid-tone gray powder would not work on anyone with dark hair, and certainly not deep skin. And, yes, I know you do not use black or even ultra-dark brown for your brows, but this is just clearly way too light. Hard pass. HARD PASS. (I also didn’t like the formula. Even if it was darker, the payoff wasn’t enough to get the full brows that I like.)

SKYN ICELAND, Berry Lip Fix with Wintered Red Algae

lip balm

This was a surprise favorite from this month’s bag. The first time I tried it I was doing some lip swatches so my lips were a bit raw. BIG MISTAKE. This formula has some sort of menthol/tingling/cooling properties so on my sore lips it was a problem. I didn’t realize that at the time because I didn’t know about the cooling. So, I initially thought it was an allergic reaction. I ended up giving it another try, though, and ended up really liking it. It has the consistency of petroleum jelly but is not greasy. It sinks into the lips and really moisturizes them. It’s a lasting moisture, too—perfect for the winter.

TARTE, Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Feisty

blush

I love tarte blushes. If you’ve read my Sephora shopping guide or sale haul, you know I have the Amazonian clay blush bazaar from this year’s holiday collection. I love it. That being said, I don’t need another single, so I passed it on to a friend. That doesn’t diminish my love for the blush, and the shade looks similar to some in the palette that I enjoy. So, I gave this five-stars in my ipsy rating.

COLOURPOP COSMETICS, Ultra Satin Lip in Baracuda

gloss

This was another item that I did not like at first, but ended up happy that I gave it another shot. These kinds of colors can be a bit tricky on my skin tone. But, thankfully a more brown toned lip liner helped transform this color into a gorgeous everyday pinky mauve. I love ColourPop’s lip formula. I love most ColourPop products actually. (Most. Stay tuned for my upcoming Showdown series. A ColourPop product will be up for review.)

Final thoughts

Overall, I was not impressed with this bag. I really only genuinely liked 3 out of 5 items. Unfortunately, that is a fail in my book. I am thinking about changing my beauty subscription service to BoxyCharm next year based on a post/recommendation from another blogger, @KindaPuffy. Her October Boxy Charm review really got me seriously considering it. For now, though, I will be receiving December’s ipsy, but stay tuned to see what changes I decide to make for next year. Either way, I enjoy makeup and beauty products way too much to not be subscribed to SOMETHING.

Thanks for reading guys & happy holidays!♥

Every month, Ipsy releases a new Glam Bag design. This month’s was a crimson lace-print bag with a bat zipper pull to coincide with the “Spellbound” theme for October.

1

It’s not one of my favorites, but it’s not a big deal at all. It is still a nice little cosmetic bag that I can use to help organize makeup in my makeup drawers or throw it into a bigger

purse or work bag. (As you can see in the first picture, it’s in one of my drawers. It’s holding all of my individual concealers and color correctors.)

Using the above preferences, along with my reviews of my previous months’ Glam Bags, Ipsy decided to send me the following items:

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion

2

This eyeliner gets a solid 5 out of 5 stars from me. I am obsessed with black eyeliner. It is the one thing I feel like you can never have enough of, and this one is a must-have. The formula is smooth and creamy, so it glides on like a dream. The color is a rich black (I’ve had black liners that were not truly black in color or weren’t opaque enough), and smudges out better than any gel or pencil liner I’ve ever tried. It doesn’t slide or move around everywhere and goes only exactly where you move it. Then, once it sets (which happens quickly so do one eye at a time), it does not budge. Like… not at all—which makes it perfect to use for special events, hot days, swimming, or even just in your water line on a regular Tuesday at the office. I like this liner so much that I plan on buying the full-size, and possibly even getting it in other colors (it comes in 41 shades).

Furless Black Beauty Blending Crease Brush

3

This brush is fantastic. The bristles are incredibly soft for any brush, but especially a synthetic one. They are not tightly packed, so it really just blends everything out for a gorgeous, soft diffused look. It is also cruelty free and vegan (YAY!), so you don’t have to feel bad about using it. Five stars and two thumbs up for the Furless ME3 brush.

MEECH AND MIA Loose Eyeshadow in Beige

4

Of all of my many years of using eye shadows, I have never tried a loose one. I expected them to be just completely messy, and too much of a hassle to bother with. Surprisingly, this was not that. The container has a sifter in it, so you aren’t dipping your finger into a small jar full of powder. (FYI-fingers work better for application with this shadow than even a brush dampened with setting spray.)

I honestly really like this shadow. It’s not an “OMG I’m using this everyday” kind of thing, but it is nice. I don’t know that I will actively look for a loose eye shadow, but this has at least made me willing to try them if I see a color that I like. Because the formula on this one was so smooth and easy to blend, I would definitely give this brand another try. I do want to note that the color is not beige. It is the peachy color you see in the picture. I’m not sure why they named it beige, even on the eyelids it is a shimmery light-peach color.

JM Solution Water Luminous Jelly Cleanser

5

I am constantly on the lookout for new skincare products, especially cleansers to help with my oily/combo, acnes-prone skin. This cleanser is really nice. It is a gel that turns to foam as you rub it between your damp palms. It isn’t overly scented, which is nice. It just has a nice, clean scent. I felt that it did a good job of cleaning my face, and even taking off the day’s makeup. My skin felt clean and cool after drying it off (the cool, tingling was surprising since I could not smell any menthol). It did feel very slightly tight, but that wore off quickly as I sat around and did some work before going to bed. It is a great way to cleanse my face of the day before putting on my serums and night creams. I definitely will be using this regularly (not daily, but a few times per week) or when my skin is being particularly annoying.

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Pressed Powder

6

Guys…….listen to me…..yes. That is all I have to say about this product—Y E S.

Well… that’s not all I have to say, but you get my sentiment. This powder is EVERYTHING. When I first looked at it, the first thing I thought (honestly) was “Did Ipsy forget I have deep skin or no?” because the powder is pure white. However, I took a deep breath and patted it gently on the parts of my face where I have pronounced pores using a sponge, and OMG I am so glad that I did. While yes, the powder is white, it is so finely milled that it doesn’t leave any more of a cast than my Laura Mercier Translucent Powder (original). I use this product in the morning to set under my eyes and over my pores and it literally makes my fine lines and large pores disappear. They really just vanish. I took this with me to work one day. It is amazing for touch ups on the go, whether your makeup is looking oily or dry, this fixes it right up. I was trying a new combination of base face makeup and it was looking dry and positively gross. I sprayed a rehydrating spray and lightly pat this powder on, and it seriously looked brand new. I love this (can you tell) and will be purchasing the full-size.

As you can see by how I ranted and raved about these products, this October’s Ipsy bag was a solid 5 out of 5 stars for me. Aside from the eye shadow, I have already started incorporating all of the items into my regular rotation. Even the shadow was a nice color and formula that is different for me, but that I can definitely see myself reaching for in the future. Good job, Ipsy. Good job.

I hope you guys enjoyed this month’s Glam Bag review! Come back on Wednesday for a mid-week bonus post.

Have a great weekend guys!♥

September 2017 Glam Bag Review

Welcome to my monthly Ipsy glam bag review.

Like many people, I first saw Ipsy advertised on Facebook. As is to be expected with “Facebook products,” I met the adverts with a very high level of skepticism. Reading the comments below the FB posts, I just saw line after line of women asking the same question: Has anyone tried this? As a makeup lover, I didn’t want to pass up what seemed like a good chance to get some nicely-sized products every month from reputable brands for the price of one Starbucks run. I decided one day to give it a try. Hopefully, this monthly review series will give you a basis for which you can decide on whether you want to try out this subscription service for yourself—instead of walking in blindly like I did. Or, at the very least, gives you a review of some products that you may want to try out (or pass on) for yourself, whether you decide to subscribe or not (or maybe you just did not get them in your bag).

Quick FYI that I took note of (and it stuck with me) several months ago when I first subscribed: Ipsy advertises not having a wait-list. There is a small caveat to that- you have to sign up for the automatic payments to get that benefit, otherwise they’ll hit you with the “You’ll get a bag when we get to you”-kind of thing….

Now that that’s out of the way….

So, the monthly subscription is $10/month. You get 5 full- or deluxe-sized samples and a new makeup bag every month. Once you sign up, there are a series of questions Ipsy asks so they can match you with products. You can go back and change your answers at any time to better customize your matches. I have received some pretty great items from my Glam Bags in past months. It is a great way to discover new items that you may not have known about, and brands that you may have never even heard of. I have found some of my all-time favorite products (seriously, no B.S) through Ipsy. So, for that alone, I think $10 is a great deal. That being said, let’s take a look at what I received in my September Glam Bag to see—was it still worth it? Will I continue my subscription? Should you give it a try yourself?

Let’s start with my profile. Everyone’s bag varies according to their profiles. Below are my profile preferences for September, so you can better understand why I may have received the items that were sent to me. Furthermore, looking at the list of questions and the number of answer options shows the amount of detail that goes into your preferences. Just looking at my profile, you would think I chose every option available, but that is not the case at all. There were plenty of other options to choose and many options (obviously) that you don’t have to choose for yourself.

My Ipsy Profile Preferences for this month

Every month, Ipsy releases a new Glam Bag design. This month’s was a black, faux-leather (if you can even call it that), studded case. Very cute.

Sept ipsy bag
September 2017 Ipsy Glam bag, https://www.ipsy.com/glambag#/

Using the above preferences, along with my reviews of my previous months’ Glam Bags, Ipsy decided to send me the following items:

Luxie Beauty Luxie Rose Gold Medium Angled Shading Eye Brush 207

Luxie 207 brush
Luxie Beauty Luxie Rose Gold Medium Angled Shading Eye Brush 207, https://www.ipsy.com

I gave this item 5 out of 5 (you rate each product and your overall bag by the end of the month to help get better-personalized future bags… you even can put in detailed comments). The brush is synthetic and cruelty-free, which is nice for the humanely-conscious beauty-lovers like me. The bristles are soft and fluffy, and it blends shadows nicely. I always enjoy trying new makeup brushes. So, this was definitely a good pick for me. So far, I have gotten four Luxie brushes from Ipsy, not counting this one, (either purchased separately or received in my Glam Bag), and I love them all. They are all in my regular rotation. I also love rose-gold so two-thumbs way up for me.

Beauty For Real I-Line 24-7 Eyeliner, Champagne Buzz

Beauty for Real eyeliner
Beauty For Real I-Line 24-7 Eyeliner, https://www.ipsy.com

Let’s start with two of the claims of this product (according to Ipsy): super pigmented & lasts all day.

I have one word in response—FALSE. The champagne color is pretty. It’s not the boldest or most pigmented liner I’ve used. But the real falsehood is the claim that it lasts all day…. I put it on and within minutes was like—-where did it go? Where? So, this product was 1 of 5. I love eyeliners, but if it doesn’t last…..what’s the point??

Smashbox Cosmetics Photo Finish Radiance Primer

Smashbox radiance primer
Smashbox Cosmetics Photo Finish Radiance Primer, https://www.ipsy.com

So, in terms of the size of this product (because it seemed small at first)— it most certainly was not full-sized. It was 0.25 fl. oz. Considering that most full-sized foundations and primers are 1.0 fl. oz., I am not mad at the size of this. I would say that it is a deluxe sample as you can get multiple uses from it to really test the product. That being said, this product is another 1 of 5 stars for several reasons.

This primer felt very thick and heavy- which is odd for a primer. I have several different kinds of primers, and have never felt one of this thickness. My pores felt instantly clogged, and I did not see any “radiance” in my skin with just the primer. Furthermore, this was very irritating to my skin. As I said, my pores felt clogged instantly and I began to feel irritation. I didn’t even have a chance to test the primer with a foundation because I had to immediately wash my face. Instead of this product, I can use my Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal if I want a more radiant look.

Dear, Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner

Dear, Klairs toner
Dear, Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner, https://www.ipsy.com

This month, Ipsy collaborated with Soko Glam, a K-beauty (K stands for Korean) company that brings Korean skincare products to the US, to bring us some great K-beauty skin-care picks. Koreans (both men and women) are known for their incredible skin and intense skincare routines (10-13 steps DAILY). In an effort to save my face before I enter my thirties, I have been super into K-beauty and skin-care recently (the sheet-mask obsession is so real), so I was excited about this. Thankfully, my excitement was not misplaced.

This toner is a solid 5 out of 5. It is not like your typical toner. I regularly use a Rose Water Witch hazel toner <https://www.thayers.com/shop-thayers/premium-witch-hazel/thayers-alcohol-free-rose-petal-witch-hazel-toner/> which is good, but it is not like this. The Dear, Klairs toner is surprisingly moisturizing. I did not know toners could be so, but it is. It is not heavy, and feels really nice going onto the skin. You do not apply it with a cotton ball or pad; you put some in your palms and pat it gently onto your face. This toner is absolutely perfect for all skin types. I have oily skin with some very dry patches in my T-zone. It was hydrating without making my skin more oily, but it also moisturized my dry areas. Even under matte foundation, my dry patches were well taken care of.

This was a successful collaboration as I will definitely be checking out Soko Glam for more Korean skincare products…and wasn’t that the point.

Elizabeth Mott Pop! Goes The Shadow, Gunmetal

Elizabeth Mott eye shadow
Elizabeth Mott Pop! Goes The Shadow, https://www.ipsy.com

This was a middle-of-the-road item for me—3 of 5 stars. It was a single shadow (Ipsy has sent mini-palettes before). Very soft, easily blendable, pretty color. Not all shadows need to be ultra-pigmented. This one was not. It looks like a sheer gunmetal-colored velvet on the lid and would be good for a soft smoky eye (stay tuned for my upcoming post about the soft-smoky trend for this fall). My issue is that it is not long-lasting, even over a shadow primer. For that reason, even with its non-creasing ability, I have to take off two stars.

Final thoughts….

I think the variety of products in this month’s Glam Bag was great. Receiving tools, skincare and makeup gave me a chance to try a new product in every aspect of my beauty routine. As I said before, I think the collab with Soko Glam was definitely a success. I look forward to next month’s bag. I may tweak some of my profile settings, so come back next month to see what I get. 💜
