BoxyCharm February 2019 Review

Quick product reviews and swatches

Hey guys!

In case you are unfamiliar with BoxyCharm, it is a monthly beauty box subscription. For about $26/mo ($21 plus tax), you get five full-sized beauty products delivered to your home every month.

The theme for this month’s box was After Glow. I like that they skipped the hearts and roses that a lot of brands go for in February; instead, this was a really fresh take on the month of love. Afterglow refers to the pinkish hue and golden light of the sky right after sunset–a really gorgeous, romantic time. However, as ties more directly into the whole Valentine’s Day theme, the phrase “basking in the afterglow” can also refer to the moments of satisfaction right after sex.

I think the contents of this box definitely fit the AfterGlow theme, in both contexts:

TOO FACED | Better Than Sex Mascara, $24

I haven’t opened it because I am trying to finish up the two mascaras that I’m currently using. But, I am looking forward to trying this mascara. People absolutely swear by it. A nice addition to the box and my collection.

PRETTY VULGAR | Shimmering Swan Highlighter in Sparkling Sass, $32

I have loved every Pretty Vulgar product that I’ve tried. So, I was looking forward to trying this highlighter. In the pan, it looked like it may be a bit too gold for my preference, but on the skin the shade is a perfect champagne-like hue. The formula just melts into my cheek and does not have any glitter or emphasize any texture. This is exactly what I look for in a highlighter.

TOUCH IN SOL | No Poreblem Primer, $18

This cute pink primer is a dupe for the YSL Touche Èclat Blur Primer that I’m trying to finish up in my project pan. It feels the same (maybe a tad bit more lightweight), wears the same and even smells exactly the same. The amazing part is that not only is this primer more than 50% less expensive than YSL (which is $52), but it’s also cruelty-free!

SOL DE JANEIRO | Coco Cabana Cream, $20

I really cannot stand the smell of this body cream. It smells like a combination of artificial coconut and movie popcorn butter. As soon as I opened the container, I immediately closed it again. I didn’t even bother testing the feel, because I’m just going to give it away. It’s a no from me dog. Hard Pass.

NUDESTIX | Magnetic Luminous Eye Color in Copper Foil, $24

NUDESTIX eyeshadow pencils do not work for me as lid colors. My eyelids are too oily so it always just becomes a creased, greasy mess a few short hours into the wear. However, I have found that the long-wear formula make these great for my lower lash line. This copper color isn’t unique to my collection, but I think it works beautifully with the box’s theme. If you don’t have oily lids, this makes for a quick eye look. You can just place it all over the lid and blend it out with your finger.

Overall, I think this month’s box was pretty good. My favorite items were the highlighter and mascara. Obviously I won’t be using the body cream, but I can definitely get use out of  the other two items as well. The total of successful products in this box comes to $98, not bad for a box that cost less than $30.

Next month is a BoxyLuxe month (for which I’m subscribed). I have seen some spoilers, but I’m super curious about what will actually be in the box that I receive. What was your favorite BoxyCharm item this month? Let’s chat!

BoxyCharm | January 2019

Hey, Google. How do you define disappointment?

First, let me start by apologizing for not doing a December BoxyCharm review. I had actually gotten BoxyLuxe for the first time, but in the crazy rush of the holiday season I didn’t get great pictures of the products, and then it got to the point that it felt too late. My overall thoughts on it was that it was a decent box. There were some pretty awesome items, and I don’t regret upgrading at all. If you want a post on the highlights from that box, let me know. I can still do it.

Now January’s box…..

Here’s my current sentiment:

Let’s just say I’m unimpressed.

Here’s what I got:

Briogeo | Don’t Despair, Repair! Stregth + Moisture Leave-in Mask, 2oz., MSRP $16

This is one of the two products that I am going to keep. I love Briogeo and this leave-in mask is already I product that I own and love. It will be nice to have a small travel size version to have on hand.

Smith & Cult | The Tainted Lip Stain, MSRP- $24

First of all, mine came crushed. How a metal cap get’s crushed in a perfectly not-crushed box, idk. I have reached out to BoxyCharm about it, so we shall see what happens. In terms of the product itself, the packaging feels heavy and luxe (minus being crushed). From what I can see, it looks like it is a baby pink color. I’m not really into pink lip colors. I do own some, but I don’t often reach for them. So, I don’t really want to add another to my collection. If BoxyCharm ends up replacing it (which they ought to), I’ll put the not-crushed one into a future giveaway.

UPDATE: The cap is intentionally dented. Please see the below response from BoxyCharm.

Thank you for contacting Boxycharm. We agree that it is quite odd to see the cap of your lip gloss dented as such however, it is actually a unique indicator that the product is a Smith & Cult. As an overview, the brand is all about representing a woman’s duality. As also indicated on their website, the story is echoed in the name, too: “Smith” is the so-called “good girl”, while “Cult” is the edgy one. Hence, the silver-hammered bottle caps reflect the duality—one side is smooth and pristine, while the other side is dented. We hope this information helps. Stay charmed! ❤

Tarte | Limited-Edition Rainforest of the Sea Highlighting Eyeshadow Palette Vol. III, MSRP $36

Unfortunately, this palette is not something I’m interested in. It comes with seven neutral shimmers and one beige matte. I would have been happier with it if it were an all shimmer palette (even though I own all the shimmer colors in other palettes), but the one beige matte just throws me off. I’m putting it to the side for a giveaway; for that reason, I don’t want to open it just for the sake of a photo.

Tatcha | Luminous Dewy Skin face Mask (2 Pack), MSRP $24

I am actually really excited for this product. I love face masks and have been really wanting to try some more skincare items from Tatcha. Now that we are in the dead of winter, my skin is really drying out from both the cold outside and heater indoors. I am in desperate need of added nourishment, so this is perfect timing.

Starlooks | Luxe Longwear Eye Pencil, MSRP $19

I have used one of this brand’s liquid eyeliners before and I thought it was decent. So, I do think this quality could be there for this. However, I really don’t need another brown eyeliner. I don’t tend to use them. That’s all. I will also be putting this to the side for someone else to enjoy.

Overall thoughts:

Google, how do you define disappointment?

Truthfully, because the boxy was only $21, I cannot say that it was not worth the price only because I got the Tatcha face masks ($24) and the travel-size Briogeo conditioner ($16). I would have paid $21 for those two items. Unfortunately, this month’s box still felt like a fail because I only am interested in 2 of the 5 products. That’s only 40%.

When you sign up for these kinds of subscription services, you cannot control what you get. That is just a risk we all take. Some times you get really incredible boxes, and sometimes you don’t. We can’t win them all, right? The good news is there’s always next month…

What did you guys get in your BoxyCharm this month? Are there any other beauty subscriptions that you’re currently loving?

Product Update: Lashaholic Luxury Lashes

Hi guys!

So, I received this product in the November BoxyCharm.

First, I need to note that this brand is NOT cruelty-free as they do sell mink lashes*, but this style of lashes is silk. Since I received them in a pre-paid subscription box, I planned to try them out, and if I liked them, find a cruelty-free dupe for the style.

The style was beautiful. They weren’t lightweight, but they weren’t obnoxiously heavy either. Unfortunately, the problem I had with these lashes was that they gave me a rash. Where the lashes touched my eyelids near the crease, I started developing redness, irritation and slight swelling by the end of the day.

On the first day, I thought it could’ve been the eyeshadow From the BoxyCharm. So, the next day, I put nothing on my lids, but decided to wear the lashes. Once again, by the end of the day I was seeing the same rash redevelop.

So, besides not being from a cruelty-free brand, these gave me eye rashes. I did throw them out right away, but I will still try to find some cruelty-free dupes based on the original pictures I took for my BoxyCharm post.

Have any of you guys ever had a bad experience with makeup or a beauty product? Let’s chat!

💜Michelle Lisette

*Due to a recent discovery that Huda Beauty continues to sell mink lashes on the brand’s website, I will no longer be purchasing or reviewing her products.

November 2018 BoxyCharm

$21 a month for a mystery beauty box? Let’s see what I got (with swatches)!

Hi guys!

This month’s BoxyCharm theme is Goal Getter. Everything has gold, either in packaging or the product itself. I guess I get the correlation, but all goals don’t have to do with amassing wealth…am I overthinking it? Yes? Okay, moving on. Let’s see what I got (Note- this is Version 3 of the box).

CoverFx, Glitter Drops in the shade Nova, $44

The glow is crazy on these. The amount of glitter is crazier. They are glittery AF. I’m really not sure how I will use this in my daily life, though…. I may try mixing it into the MUFA Mat Velvet foundation that I’m trying to pan to make it glowy.

(I tried it on the back of my hand… I don’t think it’s going to work…The glitter overwhelms the foundation.)

I don’t like glittery highlights either so…I really don’t know what to do with this. I may find a friend to give it to if I can’t figure it out.

Ace Beautè, Grandiose Palette, $24.99

This palette is so beautiful. I’ve heard such great things about this brand’s eyeshadow palettes that I was super excited to see it in the box. Swatching the colors, the matte feel creamy and smooth, the shimmers are like butter and pack a serious punch. I am very much looking forward to using this palette. I can see myself getting a ton of use from it if the shadows perform on the eyes like I am hoping they do. The only thing I don’t like is that there is no mirror. I’m the person that really prefers using the mirror in the palette but I’ll survive.

Luxie, Luminous Eye Set, $21

I have said it before, but I LOVE receiving brushes in subscription boxes. That is how I got the majority of my brush collection. Luxie brushes, specifically, are my favorite brand of brushes to receive. They are some of the most high quality cruelty-free brushes that I have ever used. I know I can always count on them to perform well. This set of brushes is nice and small for detail work. I think they will be really great additions to my collection. These alone are worth the cost of this month’s subscription price.

Jontéblu, Glittering Start Eyeliner, $5

This is a really affordable cruelty-free brand. I have tried one of their pencil eyeliners before and it was okay. I don’t really use glittery black eyeliners, especially pencil liners. So, again, I’m not sure how much use I will get out of this product.

Lashaholic Lashes, Instaglam False Eyelashes, $14.99

I don’t really wear falsies very often, and when I do, I prefer natural-looking lashes such as the Ardell Demi-Wispie line. These look like they may toes the line between natural and dramatic. So, I will give them a try… I just don’t know when.

I have to say, this month’s box caters pretty heavily to glitter lovers. That isn’t really me. I don’t even like glittery eyeshadow very often. The two products that save this month are the Luxie brushes and the eyeshadow palette. The price of those is more than double the cost of the subscription, so I don’t feel like I was cheated. I will let you guys know if I can figure out a way to use the CoverFx drops, but if I don’t say anything, just assume I gave them away.

Do you guys subscribe to any beauty boxes? Was your box worth it this month? Let’s chat!

October 2018 BoxyCharm First Impressions & September Follow-up

Hi guys!

As promised, this month’s BoxyCharm post contains my follow-up thoughts on the September 2018 box. So, if you are interested in that, I’ve included it at the end of this post.

As for this month, the theme was alter ego. Looking at the mix of products, almost everything does have a dark vibe– which I don’t mind.

It Cosmetics, Superhero Elastic Stretch Volumizing Mascara, MSRP $24

TBH, I have not tried this product yet. I currently have 3 mascaras open that I am trying to get through. So, in order to not be wasteful, I am going to wait to open this product. Once I do get a chance to use it, I will do a review.

Dermovia, Lace A Peel Black Bamboo Charcoal Peel Off Mask, MSRP $30

I haven’t tried this one either because I was dealing with a breakout, and was trying to pinpoint the culprit. So, I didn’t want to introduce anything new.

Pur The Complexion Authority, Midnight Masquerade Palette, MSRP $38

I love Pur face products. The blush and highlighters in this palette are no different. I will caution that they are very bold blush colors, and on my medium-deep complexion I have to be SUPER light-handed to make them wearable. Once on, though, they blend easily and wear well. The eyeshadows are better than the last Purchase shadows that I tried. They blend and apply pretty easily. I have to keep testing them to really make a solid decision. The colors in the palette are not everyday wearable unless you like bright colors, but for vampy weekend/party vibes, they are perfect.

Kat Von D, Everlasting Liquid Lipstick, MSRP $20

The one time I tried this product, it was super patchy. I plan on trying it more to try different application methods, but I wasn’t impressed.

Farmacy Beauty, Green Clean, MSRP $22

This cleansing balm is fantastic. It removes my makeup like a dream, including my eye makeup. I have tried washing it off with water, as well as just wiping it off with a damp cloth, and in both cases my face felt clean and hydrated, but not oily at all. As a cruelty-free, clean beauty product that works well, I will definitely repurchase this. I have already incorporated it into my daily routine.

Was it worth the $21? Absolutely. The Farmacy cleansing balm was so amazing that I plan to pay the regular $22 for it. So, that plus 4 other full-size products? I’m happy.

After a month of having these products in my collection…

Pretty Vulgar Nightingale Smokey Eyeshadow Palette, MSRP $35 USD

I am really enjoying this palette. I think the colors are unique and unlike anything else in my collection. It is super easy to use for quick everyday looks as well as more dramatic ones. I haven’t used it a ton, but from what I’ve noticed, shadows last well all day. I’m really happy to have it and look forward to using it more this fall and winter.

Laura Geller Baked  Blush-N-Brighten in Tropic Hues, MSRP $28

I love this blush. Since I’ve received it, it has stayed in my everyday drawer. I’ve honestly used it the majority of the days. It looks really bright in the pan, but on my skin tone, it us just a really pretty wash of color and glow. I love it. Love it.

Alamar Cosmetics Ojitos Brush Set, MSRP $18

I think this is a decent brush set. My favorites are still the tight liner and flat painter brush. I use the flat painter the most. I love getting brushes in subscription boxes. So, I’m still happy to have received these and do use them.

Lorac Pro Liquid Lipstick in Black Cherry, MSRP $19

I tried this liquid lip after filling in my lips with a lip liner and I think that made a difference in its wearability. I would wear it again.

Butter London Stroke of Wow Roll On Liner in Pitch Black, MSRP $19

This is a decent product. It does make getting a straight line pretty easy, but I always go in with another liner to fill in the space between the line from this liner and my lashes. I will continue to use it but I don’t think I’d repurchase it.

September 2018 BoxyCharm Unboxing & First Impressions

Was it worth the $21 price tag? Let’s see.

Hi everyone!

This month’s theme is Wild Flower. To be honest, I do not see the correlation between the items and the theme. Nonetheless, I am very pleased with the items I received.

Pretty Vulgar Nightingale Smokey Eyeshadow Palette, MSRP $35 USD

First Impression: In my first time trying these shadows, I thought they blended well and were nicely pigmented. Even the shimmer shades went vibrantly using just a dry brush. I am really happy about this palette. The autumn, cool-tones are going to be right on trend, and I am looking forward creating a ton of looks with this.

Laura Geller Baked  Blush-N-Brighten in Tropic Hues, MSRP $28

FI: Super pigmented with a natural, non-glittery glow. This blush will work well over the more matte foundation look that I will be going for this fall to add a healthy glow to the cheeks. The color is really beautiful and great for everyday on deeper skin.

Alamar Cosmetics Ojitos Brush Set, MSRP $18

FI: My favorite two brushes of the set are the tight liner and the flat painter brush. The blending brush is okay, but the bristles are a little longer than my preferred style of brush. However, it does do a good job of diffusing color in larger areas.

Lorac Pro Liquid Lipstick in Black Cherry, MSRP $19

FI: Long-lasting and comfortable, but don’t smile. The color goes on smoothly, and dries down nicely. I thought I really liked it, but then I smiled, and there was a giant crack in the color down the center of my bottom lip. I tried reapplying, but still had the same issue. The color lasted for hours through a smoothie (no straw) and did not transfer, but I would have to try it with a liner underneath or something to see if I can get it to not have that cracked effect.

Butter London Stroke of Wow Roll On Liner in Pitch Black, MSRP $19

FI: There is a slight learning curve, but the innovative roller wheel applicator helps create precise wings. The black ink is a rich satin-finish black, and it stayed on all day. So far, so good.

Was this month’s box worth the $21? Absolutely, at a value of $119, I can definitely see myself getting use out of all of these products. So, in the end I feel like I got $99 worth of free beauty products. Not bad!

In next month’s unboxing I plan to do a follow-up on these products in addition to my first impressions on October’s box. So stay tuned!

Thanks for stopping by!
